The Big Sable Lighthouse is located in Ludington State Park and is therefore protected. The 112 foot tall conical brick light was automated in 1968. However, in the1970's, the light was in danger of being destroyed by the waves, when it was saved by the Big Sable Lighthouse Keeper's Association. A new light pole was constructed to replace it, but cannot due to the Big Sable's light, which is still functioning, interfering with it.
