Spectacle Reef has been warning vessels of the dangerous shoal below since 1874. Since 1972, the light has been replaced by an automated light that is run by solar power. Spectacle Reef is know as one of the most impressive examples in the Great Lakes System of a monalithal stone lighthouses.
